1835 Census

The Cherokee Census of 1835 (sometimes called the "Henderson Roll") enrolled Cherokee families living East of the Mississippi River. Only identifiable Bell Detachment members are included here. Information recorded in the census included the name of head of household, the number of people in their household, agricultural output, comments on their literacy and employment, and mentions of race and slavery (this includes problematic language including “half blood,” referring to Cherokee-white ancestry, and “negro”, for enslaved people).

This information is taken from Grant Foreman's typescript version of the census from the Oklahoma Historical Society. When possible, information is added and verified from the original, digitized here by the National Archives.
